This is one of 3 vehicles that Detail Werkz just had the opportunity to work on. This vehicle was in need of major work to get it ready for the The Houston Classic Auction. This 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda Sport Coupe has the best possible documentation chain because of the unbroken link between what the paperwork says was ordered, what the body tags show was produced, and an expert analysis of the car in its current state.
This vehicle was completely non-restored and original down to its 24,000 odometer reading. The original owner of a large private collection in Fort Worth had the car repainted in its FJ5-coded color of Limelight Sublime Green and left the rest of the car completely original because there was almost no deterioration.
This Hemi went for 225K at auction, and just goes to show how rare this one really was!
There was some major orange peel from the re-spray on the rear driver quarter and across the trunk lid. I sanded the areas with 1000, 1500, 2500 and 3000 and using GI Extreme Cut and a GI white foam pad to work out the sand scratches and bring back a nice swirl free finish to the paint work.
The whole car was attacked with the GI Extreme Cut with white foam pad via the high-speed. Then GI Evolution Polish with EVP via GI red foam pad again using the high-speed. Then to refine the finish more we applied a glaze via the 7424 before applying 2 coats of the GI Signature High Gloss and 2 coats of the GI Concorso gloss.
The interior was cleaned using the GI Satin Leather Cleaner, and GI T.R.V. was applied to all the vinyl, plastics and rubber items inside and GI Satin Leather Polish was applied to the seats. We used the GI Signature Tire Gel on the engine and tires.
Finished off the detail with a few coats of the GI Gloss Enhancer spray.
Enjoy the shots...
The whole car looked this bad with quite a few swirls and rids in just about every panel.
Using the high speed and the GI Extreme Cut Beta and the GI yellow foam pad to remove the swirls and deeper RIDS. About speed 3 at this stage.
It was hard to get a clean shot of the correction but it corrected very well with 100% of the swirls removed and close to 98% of the RIDS removed. This paint again being from the early 90's
Another good shot of the swirls, and rids that were on 99% of the vehicle.
Chris using the Flex high speed with the GI Extreme Cut Beta and GI white foam pad, and I using the Makita high-speed with a red Meguiars foam pad. The roof and hood were really bad with some major deep RIDs. It took a few passes and speeds around 3 - 4 using the new GI EVP pad prime.
Reflection restored when leveled out the swirls and rids in the paint. Sanding the paint would have made this vehicle pop, but the owner wanted to not damage the history much and leave some orange peel in the paint.
A great shot using the Fenix TK10 LED light to show the correction process and clarity once the removal of the swirls and RIDS out of the paint finish.
Chris using the 7424 and a black megs foam pad to apply the glaze. Really working the glaze to a translucent state made the paint look like a mirror finish and really helped restore depth that was hindered by the old paint.
After applying the GI Signature High Gloss Polish and a few coats of the GI Concorso Gloss Polish the car took on a new demeanor.
Chris touching up the vehicle using GI Gloss Enhancer Detail Spray on the chrome and matte finish in the rear.
This is the trunk area that I needed to sand to restore some depth as the orange peel was very pad and was hindering the depth and shine that was going to be needed once this car rolled across the auction block. Again using 1000, 1500, 2500 and 3000 on my air DA I was able to level the paint to a much more crisper finish. Using the megs red twisted wool pad and the new GI Extreme Cut Beta to knock out the 3000 grit marks and refining with the GI Extreme Cut Beta 4 with the GI white foam pad and EVP prime on my high speed.
We wanted the engine compartment, hoses etc to have that old feel, but still have a very clean look. We used a combination of GI T.R.V. and GI Signature Tire Gloss to achieve this look we were going after. The after shows a clean look and feel and not the high glossy look of a just detailed engine bay.
