cleaning my engine

I have a 2001 BMW 3 series, and I want to clean my engine to try to make it look new again. What are my risks? I know on older cars you need to wrap certain items in aluminum foil to prevent water from making contact. What about the newer cars? I really do not see any connectors that might have issues if I spray water on the engine? What is a good cleaner to use to loosen old dirt? Can I spray the Satin Leather Cleaner on my engine to clean it? Can I spray the Signature Tire Gloss on my motor after I am done to give it some life? Is that going to hurt it? Would it be ok to apply some of the TRV on my hoses and plastic parts if the Tire Gloss is not a good idea?

Awesome questions, i have a truck in now i am painting i would liek to detail the engine bay as well for him, and a few newer cars whose owners inquired about detailing the engine bay. I used to power spray down my s10 and i just had to cover up the intake and battery and i was good to go. I dont want to wreck a brand new corvette.

I use this spray I buy from Discount Auto Parts of all places...... it's a 2-in1 spray. Cleaner and "Polish". What I like about it is you can use it on a warm engine. Then I spray the Engine Compartment down with Armour-All Natural so it's not all greasy. I have a feeling though..... after becoming a Gloss-It fan this weekend, I'll be using something else other than Armour-All.
