Has anyone had a DA backing plate and pad fail?

Myself and one of the guys I work with here each purchased the DA small plate and white pads to use with the Griot's DA polisher. He used his first, and after just 10 minutes he had total heat failure of both the pad and the plate. The plate glue failed, the velcro melted, and the pad collapsed. Obviously he allowed it to get too hot, and the heat came from the polisher, which is quite powerful. We know now not to use the polisher on the highest setting as it just gets too warm, but I'm surprised it took so little time to ruin them. Has anyone had similar results?

I felt bad after referring him here so I gave him my new ones.

Okay... sorry Damon about responding to you question in a timely manner.

I am looking into the solution for this problem. The problem is the amount of heat generated through the head of the PC transfers down the bolted thread heating the backing plate in return melting the glue between the Velcro and foam.

I have found through testing that when the machine is getting hot to let of the heavy pressure applied for removing the deeper imperfections. This is a failure of the machine getting way to hot and the backing plate was never intended to take this amount of heat. I would like to keep the soft cellular foam due to the flexibility it offer for contour panels on most cars today.

I will be working on this issue that is only isolated to the PC polisher not rotary. Might take some time with SEMA around the corner.

You said your friend has a Griot's DA Polisher... which one does he have? When it comes to the Griot's polishers, you are only supposed to use their included backing plate. The Griot's 6" Polisher can only use its own 6" backing plate, and the Griot's 3" Polisher can only use its own 3" backing plate.

Your friend can use Gloss It Pads (or pads from any manufacturer) but they have to be the same size as his Griot's polisher/included backing plate.
